Die eigene Paketquelle

Our own package source

Set it up once — every new version then arrives on its own.

Until now you had to come back to this page for every new version and fetch the file by hand. From version 1.48 there is another way: Rikus Snapshot has its own package source. It is the same technique your system uses to keep all other programs current. You add it once — after that every new version simply shows up with your normal system updates, with nothing left for you to do.

Step 1 — get the key. With it your computer can tell that the packages really come from us and that nobody changed anything on the way. Freshly installed computers often lack the small program curl – the command installs it first:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y curl && sudo install -d /etc/apt/keyrings && sudo curl -fsSL https://apt.rikus.info/rikus-apt.gpg -o /etc/apt/keyrings/rikus.gpg

Step 2 — add the source. One single line telling your system where to look:

echo "deb [signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/rikus.gpg] https://apt.rikus.info stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/rikus.list

Schritt 3 — einspielen.

Step 3 — install. The first time quite a bit comes along: Rikus Snapshot needs the build tools and the installer. That takes a few minutes and is then done.

sudo apt update && sudo apt install rikus-snapshot

On first start the program asks for your unlock code. You get it free of charge using the button at the top of this page — name, e-mail, country, and the code arrives by mail at once. You type it once and are never asked again.

If you already have the program: nothing needs reinstalling. Add the source as shown above and the new version is offered to you as an ordinary update — including by Rikus Updateall. The same source also carries Rikus Software, Rikus Updateall, Rikus Zram and Rikus Cleanup.

Want to remove the source again? Two lines and everything is as before — the program itself stays installed:

sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/rikus.list /etc/apt/keyrings/rikus.gpg && sudo apt update

It stops with “unmet dependencies”? This happens on Debian 13 and LMDE 7 when the backports repository is switched on and packages from it are already in use, for example for Hyprland. Then two building blocks do not fit together. This works:

sudo apt install -t trixie-backports rikus-snapshot

So geht's

How it works

Five steps from download to installed clone.

The simple way: click “Get it free” above, then double-click the file. Your system's software installer opens and installs the program.

Oder im Terminal, mit vollem Pfad:

Or in a terminal, using the full path:

sudo apt install ~/Downloads/rikus-snapshot_1.48_all.deb

Important: run the command on the machine where the file actually is. If your system says “unsupported file … on the command line”, the file is not there — the package is fine. Usually it is the wrong folder, or you are on a different machine over a remote connection.

Danach steht Rikus Snapshot im Startmenü unter „System“.

After that Rikus Snapshot appears in your application menu under “System”.

  2. Download the .deb package and install it with a double-click.
  4. On first start the program lists what is still missing — one click on “Set up now” fetches it (one password prompt, internet needed).
  5. „Schnappschuss jetzt erstellen" klicken und warten (15–25 Min.).
  6. Click "Create snapshot now" and wait (15–25 min).
  8. Write the ISO to a USB stick and verify it bit for bit.
  9. Vom Stick starten, „System installieren" doppelklicken — fertig.
  10. Boot from the stick, double-click "Install System" — done.
⚠️

Important — the destination must be on an ext4 file system. The ISO is not only stored there, it is built there: your system is copied over file by file first. That needs a Linux‑formatted drive (ext4) — e.g. a folder on your internal disk. USB sticks and external drives ship as exFAT or FAT32 and cannot store the links a Linux system is made of. Reformatted to ext4 they work fine — what matters is the file system, not the connector. The finished ISO may of course go on a stick.
